Chris is tremendously skilled at what he does, which is more than a man with a metal detector.
testimonial for Chris Turner (2025)My wife and I, with our near 3-month-old son, went to Jericho Beach for our first family beach day together. Joined by our friend and her two daughters we grabbed a spot in the shade. I am not as enthusiastic about the beach as my wife.
I typically relax with a book while she satisfies her inner mermaid by being in the water. As we’ve done many times before, my wife gave me her wedding rings to safeguard while she swam. One simple gold wedding band and an engagement ring I had designed. I had the ring designed with zero input from my wife, risky, I know. But I was confident I knew her taste.
She loves flowers, specifically the Dogwood, BC’s Provincial flower and has a special place in her heart from where her mother is from. I had the jeweler include six dogwoods with pink diamonds in their centers around the center set stone. This ring hand-off is not new to us.
I typically place them on a chain I wear around my neck. But not this time. I was just sitting in a beach chair reading. I foolishly felt comfortable with these rings loose on my pinky finger while I flipped pages and occasionally dipped my multi-ringed fingered hand into a bag of Pretzel Crisps.
Occasionally, I would like up from my studies to see my wife entertaining our friend’s two daughters in the water while our friend was cradling our young son. There was a cool breeze, and the shade protected us from the scorching sun. I reached for my drink and sighed. Everything felt right in the world. Until ….My wife came in from the water to enjoy a snack and feed our son. After his feeding, she asked if I wanted some baby snuggles, which of course is a silly question.
I dumped my books onto a beach towel and cradled our sweet boy. While I adjusted him in my arms, he started to fuss so I got up from the beach chair and paced while rocking him. I probably covered about 50 m in either direction from where I was sitting. The breeze picked up, so I returned to my chair where his blanket was. I awkwardly leaned down and snatched it off the diaper bag and wrapped him well to keep him warm.
We continued to pace up and down the beach until he spat-up on my shoulder. I returned to our spot to get a cloth to wipe my son’s mouth and my shoulder. I passed my son to my friend and then went to the diaper bag to retrieve a cloth. That’s when I noticed my wife’s engagement ring was no longer on my finger.
A blast of panic shot through my body. I tried to imagine when and where the ring could have fallen off. I thought back to when I grabbed the towel and started to sift through the sand. My friend, sensing my panic, asked if everything was okay. I told her what happened, the ring was gone.
My wife, who was in the water at the time, also sensed the turbulent energy coming from our spot. She asked if everything was okay. I managed meekly, “I can’t even say it.” This prompted her to join us, and I told her what happened. “I lost your engagement ring.” Time stopped. I covered my tracks looking everywhere, sifting areas I had walked with my son.
I had been sitting most of the time anyhow. I emptied my pockets, emptied our beach bags, searched the bag of Pretzel Crisps! Repeatedly, I searched bags and pockets, praying that I had somehow missed a gold ring with diamonds. We searched and searched. It was hopeless. I can’t express how terrible the feeling was in my gut and more so in my heart.
She gave me these rings to keep safe and I failed. The feeling was near crippling. I just felt sick. Some bystanders, watching our search, offered to help and suggested we google someone with a metal detector. That thought hadn’t even crossed my mind. Time felt so precious, like wherever the ring was it was slowly descending deeper into the sand, further from detection.
While I kept sifting and searching my wife googled “Vancouver beach metal detector.” She was on the phone for maybe a few minutes. She was talking to Chris Turner, TheRingFinders. He assured her that everything would be okay and if it was lost in the sand, he would find it.
Chris didn’t treat this like a job; he treated this like his purpose. He would check in with texts to let us know his ETA. He even asked me if I wanted a coffee. I met him at the beach which was dark now. He assured me, if I could retrace my steps and it was lost in the sand, I’d be leaving the beach with the ring.
We walked to the spot where I was sitting in my chair and I worried that I had made the situation worse by sifting and moving around too much sand. With his instruments he moved deliberately in the area. I had a feeling that if he didn’t find it immediately, he wouldn’t find it at all.
Chris commented that the iron content in the sand would make detection difficult. He returned to an area and said he heard something feint but was worth inspecting. He plunged his sifting tool into the sand and pulled up a full scoop. As he rocked the basket back and forth, the sand trickled out like an hourglass.
It felt like days. I stood still, not realizing I wasn’t breathing. Finally, the basket produced a pinging noise. Metal on metal? Maybe a rock? I figured we couldn’t be that lucky, but I underestimated how good Chris is at this. “Got it” he bellowed.
I didn’t believe him. I couldn’t believe him. He smiled big and pulled a ring out the basket, our ring. I texted my wife immediately. Chris handed me the ring. I hugged him like I knew him all my life.
Chris is tremendously skilled at what he does, which is more than a man with a metal detector. Even before I met him, he reduced our anxiety and panic by keeping in touch and assuring us that if it was lost in the sand, he’d find it.
My advice to anyone who is in a similar situation is do not delay. Of course, you’ll feel like if you cover your tracks, you’ll find it. It is like looking for a needle in a box of needles. I listened through the instrument, and I don’t know how he heard our ring in the sand. There was so much distortion from the metallic composition of the sand. Chris is a pro.
Thank you, Chris, for making my heart whole again. I hope I never have to call you again to find a ring, but I am grateful that If I do, I know you’ll find it.
